Bible Lesson 1

Since we want to gain the knowledge of God, it is important that we begin at The beginning. Our God is eternal, sovereign, all knowing and almighty; and He created the earth and the heavens and all that we know to demonstrate his attribute of real love.

God created the first couple (Adam and Eve) in innocence, they did hot have the knowledge of good and evil. God gave them freedom of choice and he gave them one command to keep. They were told by God, that they must not eat of the fruit of the tree of good and evil; because in the day that they ate of that fruit they would die. Most of us know the account of their deception by the serpent (Satan) and their fall from grace.

As a result of their disobedience to God (sin) they were driven from Paradise (the garden of Eden) and they began the process of physical death, And they immediately died the most fearful death of all, that death that’s refers to as separation from God. They could no longer commune with God as they had prior to their sin. Both of those deaths passed along to us and God reminds us in Romans 3:23, that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We Inherited the nature of Adam, that selfish nature that desires to rule over our own destiny; and we have enjoyed pursuing sin as we went about our lives.

Remember, God had warned Adam that in the day that he disobeyed and ate of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, that he would die. God reminds us today that his warning still holds true and in Romans 6:23, he inspired the gospel writer to tell us that” the wages of sin is death”.

Happily God didn’t stop there; but instead went on to tell us in Romans 6:23 that “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. We were born in a state where we stood under the wrath of God because of our sin; but God has made the only way for us to escape eternity, in a literal burning hell. Because we were born sinners, we had to die; but God showed us grace (undeserved mercy) and He paid the price for us. God sent his only begotten son, Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, God in the flesh, to die for a people who were by their actions, His enemies.

n the gospel of John, God’s son Jesus Christ tells us that God loved his creation so much that he sent his only begotten son, that whosoever believed in him should not perish but have eternal life. As you may or may not know, the new testament was written in the Greek language and the Greek is very expressive and the word that is translated as belief there means faith, belief, trust, rely upon, obey and all that goes with true belief. We always act or should always act on what we really believe.

If we believe that dinner is prepared and on the table we normally sit and eat. If we believe that our house is on fire, we would call 911 and begin to attempt to save all that we could. If we believed that there was a tornado that was moving toward our house, we would take shelter. It is the same with faith and belief in the work and person of Jesus Christ, if we really truly believe, we will want to learn more about him, want to obey what we know he would have us to do and want to tell others about our wonderful Savior and Lord.

It is not enough that we know the name Jesus, not enough to want to escape hell for eternity, not enough to want to appear as a good person to those around us…. what we have to do is to know all about Jesus, all that God will teach us when we search the scriptures. That is not something that we can do in a few minutes or hours. Most people today are so shallow in their knowledge and belief that they want to serve God in their spare tine and with their pocket change. That person has no idea of God. How can we put such critical issues as our eternal lives on hold or only be willing to deal with them in a fashion that is slothful.

So many people in our day have come to equate, church-membership with salvation and they seem to think that if God sees them attend church on a regular basis, that He will have to allow them into heaven. Be forewarned good people, that is the attitude that the Pharisees had, and Jesus told them to “repent or perish”. We live in a fast pace, down and dirty, fast food, quickie marriages, and the like that we believe that we can simply deal with God on that same basis. Words almost fail me as I think of how many people today want to serve and worship God with the flesh, instead of the Spirit.

God has left us His plan for living in His World, and He warns us that we should not deceive ourselves. God says in Galatians 6:7, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that will he also reap.” Look at your life in the light of the Word of God and ask yourself, “have I been deceiving myself or does my life line up with God’s Word, the Bible?”

Let me leave you in this lesson with the challenge……that you “study to approve yourself a workman that needeth not to be ashamed.” 2nd Timothy 2:15

Until next time,

may God bless and keep you
