Bible Lesson 120

TRUE CHRISTIAN FOUNDATIONS

‘IF THE FOUNDATIONS BE DESTROYED, WHAT CAN THE RIGHTEOUS DO” PSALMS 11:3

“Faith and obedience are bound up in the same bundle; he that obeys God trusts God; and he that trusts God obeys God. He that is without faith is without works, and he that is without works is without faith.”

Spurgeon

This Lesson will deal with what seems to be happening to the very foundation of America; and because America seems unable to contribute much else to the rest of the world, we are demonstrating acts (sins), that are being mimicked by other countries. We have pretty much destroyed the foundations of our own country and now we are working to destroy any foundations that other countries have. I suppose that we need to stop here and define or explain what we mean when we say Foundation.

If we relate foundations to our knowledge we know that when we build homes, schools, department stores, and even skyscrapers, we first must provide a base, or root, or underpinning that will support the weight of whatever it is that we are building. The foundation that we are looking at in our lesson for today is the foundation that God laid which was to support the human race as they lived, worked, played, and populated God’s earth. We must understand that foundation to be made up of the Revelation of God Himself in His Word the Holy Bible, the gospel of good news and the laws, commandments, precepts, etc. that encompass the moral character of God and hold it all together.

Our foundation is not the church as we know it today, but it is Jesus Christ Himself and our God-given faith in Him and His work for us on Calvary. To prove what I say, listen as I copy from the Bible, Matthew 7:24-27, ‘Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was the fall.’ In these verses, we find Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, God with us, as He began His preaching career. If we follow our Savior and Lord we find that His purpose was to go to the cross to die for a people that were given to him before the foundation of the world (John 17:6).

Another of His purposes was to bring light to a world of darkness and turn people to the way that God had intended from the beginning.

Jesus was dealing here as He preached with a people who supposed that they knew God and knew His purpose for their lives; however, they did not know God and certainly did not know how they were supposed to live. They had the same trouble that we find ourselves at this moment in time. They had become involved with religion and the programs of religion and the preachers of religion, and consequently, they knew just enough to go to hell in a handbasket.

Jesus Christ preached the Sermon on the Mount and we have lifted these verses from chapter seven of Matthew to show you how very important a proper foundation is to those who would inherit heaven. Most of these people that heard Jesus preach this sermon had carelessly built their houses on sand (Not their homes but their lives) and Jesus was warning them that houses built on anything rather than ‘the rock’ would not stand the trials and the pressures of life. Notice that Jesus did not say ‘a rock’ ‘.He said ‘the rock’. If we study our Bible we find that Jesus is often referred to as a rock, cornerstone, foundation stone (Psalms 18:2; Psalms 31:2; Psalms 89:26; 1st Corinthians 10:4; 1st Peter 2:8; Ephesians 2:20; 1st Peter 2:6-7). So the wise builder builds his life upon Jesus Christ; not on some things about Jesus that he likes or the cheap grace Jesus that is normally preached in so many churches today.

You may ask something like how can we know if Jesus Christ is preached by this church or that is the real Jesus, and the answer is that you must apply yourself to learn who Jesus is by reading and praying and studying your Bible. That is where you find Jesus who is loving, caring, and compassionate; but He is also one way, determined, and does not allow any sin to be overlooked in our repentance and conversion. Listen, good people, our foundations, the foundations of America and all that God has for His people is being chipped away by lust, evil living, sexual sin and that covers adultery, fornication, and homosexuality. We are people who are ripe for judgment and Hollywood will not let up on using its jackhammer to accomplish it. Hollywood is making merchandise out of our young people and the old people also. They have found that by pushing the envelope on all of the sexual sins, violence, bloody-gore, and it even wants to take on issues that pertain to Christianity.

You know what I’m talking about, take homosexuality for instance and they lift it in almost all of their shows from time to time. They may get practically every living human being to sign off on homosexuality, but that won’t change God’s disdain or the fact that God himself listed it as an abomination (Leviticus 18:22; Romans 1:21-32). Yet we have congressmen and senators who show their disregard for God and His Word by supporting homosexuals in their midst (Franks and other), by voting to allow them to completely decimate the God-ordained institution of marriage being, one man and one woman for life, and by doing nothing like people who are not intimately connected to the military set aside ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’. I’ll be honest with you, I have retired from military service and we never had the problem until we began to elect effeminate people to jobs like the President, Congress and Senators, and activist judges. We don’t seem to care that God will only allow so much of this before He slams us as a country into judgment and punishment. I think the judgment should and will begin in the visible church; because the church is supposed to preach and live in such a way that it puts a restraint on the evil and the people who practice it.

The church and its leadership took it on themselves to cast the truth of the Word of God aside and to become (at least they thought they were), more caring, and more compassionate than God. As a result of that, the church is no longer a church, and I don’t care how big they are or how much money they have in the bank, they are now stumbling, bumbling, godless, hypocrites. They make what sounds like churchy noise, but they simply have a form of godliness but they deny its power. They have decided that it’s better to go to hell for eternity than it is to suffer because of Christ (Matthew 5:10-12). They have become so compassionate and caring (without Christ), that they no longer like to preach against adultery and apply that message to their congregations. They no longer believe that God knew what He was talking about when He said that homosexuals and their lifestyle were an abomination to Him. They don’t seem to be able to find a face for most sin, and so they just go along entertaining their goats and bragging about their accomplishments. Sin is never rebuked and sinners are not confronted about their sin’.and they are just one big happy family.

Because of the failure of the churches to do their God-appointed job, our foundations are being broken up and our civilization is going to hell in thong bikinis, outrageous and ungodly activities (mostly sexual), and with a stupid look on our faces. Folks, I may not be very smart but I can see what is happening to our young people. People between the ages of one year and 20 years of age are not capable of being turned loose to go to places like Cancun, and other beach areas where there is too much alcohol, drugs, and sex, and not enough sense and self-control to keep these youths out of trouble. Don’t tell me these mothers and fathers who allow these trips, don’t know what they are saying to their children as they see them off to, in many cases, to lay drunk and drugged, having sex outside of marriage and just making trouble all around. Some of these never come back and some who make it back never live over it.

It has come to the point that it is difficult to find something to watch on T.V. because our hearts and minds have allowed the producers of programs to put out nothing but reality shows which end up being raw sex. I am not a prude, but I do know that sex was a gift from God to be between a man and a woman in the bond of matrimony. They have pulled out all the stops on T.V.; because they know that the foundations are crumbling and they go after those who cannot help but watch these kinds of programs. We have a God-given cure for the destruction of our moral foundations and it is given to us in the Bible. We know from the Word of God, the Bible, that all of our problems come from a satanic move to trap simple people into Satan’s trap and take them to hell for eternity. God speaks to us in First Peter 5, verses 6-11 and warns us that we have an adversary, who seeks to destroy us and make us a child of evil, and the adversary is one who is an avowed enemy of mankind and because God has allowed Him power on the earth to tempt men, he continually attempts to deceive us, and get us to chose the wide gate and walk the broad way that leads to hell.

God tells us that we must believe, trust and obey Him (God) so that we can be sober and vigilant as we live here on the earth’..because our adversary walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. We are told to resist Him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the World. So the Christian has to know if they have read the Bible, that the Christian will suffer persecution, hatred, opposition, and even sometimes death at the hands of the accuser (Satan) and his minions. They hated Jesus Christ so much that they crucified Him, not because He was an evil man or because He never did anything but good. Christ fed the hungry, healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, and even brought some from death to life.

Which of these do you think, the people who crucified Him, wanted to kill Him’ Probably none of these but because He wanted them to change and people have always wanted to change. Why did Christ want people to change’ It was because we were all dead in trespass and sin and could not even get a hearing from God. God had judged the human race and found it wanting and had condemned it because of Adams’ sin which accrued to every person born to the flesh, and which every person expanded to some degree. Adam passed along his nature to all of us, but we used that nature to go deeper into depravity. So Christ called us all to a newness of life and He paid the price for the sins of those who would obey Him (Hebrews 5:8-9).

The people that populated the earth at the time of Christ (Over 2000 years ago) knew about God and what God had revealed of Himself to them; but because they were lazy and apathetic, they gave up their right to know the truth, to a group of men who took the truth and made it a lie to control the people. God’s Word has always been the truth and truth is absolute and does not allow for any revision or rewriting. That’s what various teachers in Israel had done. They had taken the truth and added to it or subtracted from it to suit their tastes and the taste of those who listened to them. Yes, we have had ‘ear-ticklers’ around for a long time and they are with us today. That is one reason the foundations are being destroyed.

God is particular about our foundation, and foundations are a strong place to make a stand whether it be for a home, a business, or even an individual’s life. If we have a strong place to stand we won’t have to fear being torn down by life or the devil. From the beginning, God has offered solid foundations for people to stand upon. Remember Adam’ God put him in a prepared paradise with everything good to eat and good to look at; but God who created us all knew that Adam could sin and so God gave Him a nice place to stand, when God told him that He could eat of every tree in that paradise, except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If Adam had taken advantage of what God had given him, he could have escaped death. Instead, to the detriment of himself and every man, woman, and child that has ever been born, or ever will be born, Adam disobeyed God.

We all now face the certainty of death (Hebrews 9:27). God brought the nation of the Hebrews out of captivity in Egypt, and one of the first things He did was go give them a system of Commandments or Laws that would give them a firm foundation (The Ten Commandments). Incidentally, they are still a firm foundation! Too bad we don’t bother to know and obey them. The Ten Commandments teach us the best and most holy way to walk in this world. The first four of the commands instruct men in how to have a relationship with God, their Creator. First, we must Love Him supremely there can be no one or nothing between you and God. You are never to attempt to make a god out of anything (Neither with your hands or your heart). You are never to take His name in vain (Never in cursing or even in declaring your faith in Him, while the following sin). Then we are to remember to keep the Sabbath holy.

The last six Commandments teach us how to live with others and it tells us to honor our parents, not to murder (premeditated killing), we must not commit adultery, which means to leave the bond of matrimony to one spouse to have a relationship with another. The Commandments tell us not to steal’not to take that which belongs to someone else. We are not to purge ourselves, or bear false witness against your neighbor. Finally, we are not to covet our neighbor’s possessions (house, wife, male servant or female servant, nor his ox, donkey, or anything that is our neighbor’s. That pretty well sets our foundation is steel. We love our God and do nothing that violates His Commandments, and we love and look out for our neighbors. Let me ask you right here, can you see all of that in America’s, or the people of Americas, foundations’ It doesn’t matter that we believe that we need to help people in trouble or aid countries that are hurting. We can do all of that kind of thing and, if we don’t do it because of our faith and love for Jesus Christ, it is simply another sin that will count against us (Romans 14:23b).

I am old enough (79), that I can remember a time at least where I lived, that children were under the authority of the parents, and parents were grown-up enough to know how to conduct themselves to set the example for their children. I remember when the last thing that you would see is some woman, or girl, who would wantonly expose themselves to anybody and everybody. That was a time when there were a proper place and time for everything. There was a time for children to got to bed, and there was no argument about it. There was a time for children to go to school and a time for teachers to take the authority to assure classroom decorum. There was never a time that nakedness was in order. In our time today, it seems that the more clothes our women can leave off the better they like it. I don’t know when we began to practice barn-yard actions in our living rooms as we watched these cruddy shows and allowed our children to be within ear-shot.

Something is drastically wrong with us and it is that we have not only allowed our foundations to be destroyed, but we have also assisted in the process. Over the next lesson or two, we will be discussing all kinds of foundations and we will look at the state of those foundations. I can’t understand how we could have allowed the damages that have occurred to our foundations. Take for instance the foundation that our nation was established upon. Contrary to all of the naysayers, who like to expound upon Christianity without knowing Christ or anything about Christianity; our nation was built on an understanding of the Bible and the Morality of our great and glorious God. You cannot look at the laws that were established over 200 years ago and not see the Bible as it’s base. Our law about killing or at least murder which separates the kinds of killings shadows the law about premeditated murder is never allowed; however, sometimes killing a person is necessary to save our own lives or the lives of an innocent victim. Our laws at least until the homosexual crowd took over our government a couple of years ago made it illegal to engage in sex between men and men and women and women. God has told us in the Old Testament and the New Testament that homosexuality is an abomination to Him and deserves the death penalty (Leviticus 18:22; Romans 1:22-32). Isn’t it strange that over the years we have changed our laws to allow homosexuals to serve in positions of trust, and they now serve as congressmen, senators, judges and at least one or two presidents have been sodomites. Our laws on thievery reflect the Biblical commandments (Exodus 20:15), and on and on.

Are we so arrogant that we think that we can change the laws of God by simply passing amendments or what we call updates to our laws when God says that the foundation for our laws are settled in heaven forever, (Psalms 119:89) God has given us the charter for our laws and our conduct, and regardless of how we strain to subvert it, we will stand judgment by those laws in the last day. We would do well if we would go back to reading and studying our Bibles and applying them to ourselves because we live in a society that rings with error and heresy, and just plain evil thinking. Not just in our personal lives, but in our schools and churches and especially in our government. Perhaps we should all learn and apply the words of one of our great old Hymns that have proper theology encompassed with it. The Hymn is, I believe inspired by God for our generation and it goes like this.

‘The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation, By Spirit and the Word: From heaven, He came and sought her To be His holy bride, With His blood He bought her, and for her life, He died.

Elect from every nation, Yet one o’er all the earth, Her charter of salvation, One Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, With every grace endued. ‘Mid toil and tribulation, And tumult of her war, She waits for the consummation of peace forevermore; Till with the vision glorious, Her longing eyes are blest, And the great church victorious Shall be a church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union With God the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion With those whose rest is won; O happy ones and holy! Lord give us grace that we, Like them, the meek and lowly, On high may dwell with Thee. Amen!’ So then, if we know the foundations of our family, our school, our churches, and our government are crumbling and almost destroyed’..’ What can the righteous do”

The psalmist asked that question in Psalms 11:3, and thankfully He answered it under the inspiration of God and says in the following verses, ‘the Lord is in His Holy Temple, the Lord’s throne is in heaven: His eyes behold, His eyelids try, the children of men.’ The question is asked in verse three and answered in the rest of the Psalm. God is in control and we are His righteous children and our job is simply to depend upon God as we do all that He has commanded us to do as we live here on the earth.

We have had the answer all the time’.we have just been too apathetic or lazy or timid to call on the power of God to give us the strength and the courage to stand for God in every situation where people attempt to set aside the Will and the Way of God. It time for us all to ‘man up’ and put on the armor of God and stand for the truth in every case regardless of the dangers. I know that some of you are doing that, and I applaud you and cheer you on; however, it is true that the majority of those who call themselves Christians are not living or standing like soldiers of the cross. We will have at least one other lesson on the foundation of the Christians’so stay tuned’.

Until next time,

may God bless and keep you
