Bible Lesson 169

WHAT MUST WE DO TO BE SAVED?

“Come unto Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you. Let Me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light.” Matthew 11:28-30. Life Application Bible

“IT IS THE RIGHTFUL HERITAGE OF EVERY BELIEVER, EVEN THE NEWEST IN THE FAMILY OF FAITH, TO BE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN THAT ETERNAL LIFE IS HIS PRESENT POSSESSION. TO LOOK TO SELF IS TO TREMBLE. TO LOOK TO CALVARY?S FINISHED WORK IS TO TRIUMPH.

That my friends is a question that many, or most of us have asked in the past. Before God does that supernatural work of salvation in our lives we are right to question ‘what does it take for me to have eternal life’. isn’t that what the rich young ruler asked our Lord, Jesus Christ’ I’m sure you have read or heard that account of a rich young ruler in Israel, who came to Jesus and asked, “Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life'” Now, if we parse that question we find that this was a man who was of considerable means and a place of prominence in his community, and what he desired was eternal life. He had some kind of belief in this man who was going about doing good and feeding the hungry and healing the sick.

He was a man who had considered life in it’s fullest, because he knew apparently that he would someday die and he believed in a life after this physical life on the earth where people would live for eternity. He had everything that he needed in the here and now; but he wasn’t sure about that eternal life that awaited so he asked Christ, What should I do to make sure that I have a good eternity’ He must have believed that there were at least two different eternities for every man to inherit’.one would be that blessed heavenly eternity where there would be no tears, no pain, no misery, no fear or need, and the other instead of being eternal life would be eternal death and dying and suffering.

If we read that passage there in Luke chapter 18 and verses 18-25 we find Christ first asked him if he had been keeping the commandment about dealing with his fellow man’things like not committing adultery, and not killing or stealing or bearing false witness, and did he honor his father and mother. The man assured Jesus Christ that he had kept this from his youth. Jesus then told him that he still lacked one thing in his life, and Jesus told this rich young man to sell all that he had and give it to the poor’.and then follow Jesus and he would have treasure in heaven (eternal life).

We can determine several things from these few verses; first, we can determine that we cannot hang our hope of eternal life on our partial obedience to God. We cannot do ‘some’ things and expect that God will overlook our disobedience to other things. We can determine that money can’t buy salvation. We can determine that there are many people in every age who value money now instead of eternal life.

We know this fellow did, because he considered what Christ had told him and rejected it because he walked away very sorrowful. I want you all to notice that Christ did not call him back and ‘sweeten the deal’ so to speak, instead the Savior Jesus Christ let him go on toward hell fire. Of course we have decided long ago to never allow God to allow anyone go to hell (or that is what we have thought without saying it).

We just simply bring people into the fellowship that have not brought forth ‘ works mete for repentance’. That means that we are not like John the Baptizer, who recognized those who had not followed or believed in Christ, when they came to him for baptism and instead called them a generation of vipers who were looking for fire insurance (Matthew 3:7-8). Are we still dealing with people who, like the rich young ruler, insist on valuing worldly riches and things more than they value heaven for eternity. That is exactly the substance of what we do, whenever we join the church for any reason other than having been radically changed by God in the New Birth. We can never make a choice that involves salvation unless we are ready and eager to give up all of our precious sin. The young ruler in our scripture there in Luke chapter 18 valued his money and possession more than he desired heaven for eternity. That is a terrible price for something that you can have one day and lose the next. Maybe we need to look back at the numerous cases where people had money one moment and the next, in a depression it was all gone forever. We should all know that in the late 1920’s there was a sudden collapse of our stock market in America. Many people could not tolerate the loss of their precious money and so some jumped out of windows in high rise buildings, others took different paths to death, because they could not live without their money. You have probably heard that song that says “Money can’t buy you love”. Well, on the authority of the Holy Bible, I tell you money can’t buy you heaven either.

It is to the point in our time that people who find that they cannot be saved without doing something, simply join some church group and begin to live the lie that says that because they have joined the church, they have a ticket to heaven; however, that is the devil’s trick that will cause literal millions of souls to have to spend eternity in hell. Listen closely now as I tell you again on the authority of God, there is not one single thing or lists of things that you can do to be saved. However, there are many things that you will do once God has granted you that new birth, that brings forth a new creature that walks in newness of life.

If we look at the gospel of John, we find that Christ said to Nicodemus a Christian leader in Israel, “Ye must be born again” or ye must be born from above (John 3:3,5). Then the Apostle Paul, wrote under the inspiration of God in the Gospel of the Ephesians, that we are saved by Grace through Faith, and that not of ourselves, it is the gift of God, and he continued in the next verse to tell us that we are God’s Workmanship, created in Christ, unto good works, which God prepared before-hand (Predestination), that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:8-10). Salvation is all of God, and man has no part in it except co-operation with God as God regenerates them.

(Psalms 68:20; Psalms 3:8;Acts 4:12; Romans 1:6; ). Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Moses spoke to the people in the Exodus and said'”Be still and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today” Stand still, lock up, don’t move and don’t try to do anything because God does it all. We know that Moses was speaking of a physical salvation for the Israelites; because God was saving them from death by the Egyptians, but God works in the same way in Spiritual salvation (Exodus 14:13). For the life of me , I keep wondering where so many Preachers, Pastors, and teachers came up with the idea that man could save himself. If salvation were left to man, he would never even want to be saved.

Sinners unless worked in by God are happy as sinners, who never even consider that there is a God. Consider Saul the Pharisee, who was elated to persecute those of “The Way” which is what those who followed Christ were called at that time. He was on His way to Damascus to arrest the followers of Christ and imprison them, when God knocked him off his horse and blinded him in order to save him, and use him mightily in the Kingdom of God. What do you think this fella Saul would have done if God had not knocked him off his ‘high-horse” He would have gone on doing what he was doing because his father was the devil, just like mine and yours was before God called us out of this world, to salvation in Christ. ( John 8:30-44). You may ask, well, why can’t I just decide to clean up my act, change how I live, do a little better and be saved. Well, I would ask you to go back to what you must said’. ‘clean up my act’, change how I live’ and do a little better. That is how most people who call themselves church members today were saved (‘) or thought they were saved; however in the Judgment, they will hear God say “Depart from me you evil doers'”. That shows us just how corrupt our personal righteousness really is’.it appears to God as bloody rags (Isaiah 64:6).

We have bought into Satan’s lie, which assures us that Satan knows better than God, that if we just disobey God we will become gods, knowing right from wrong. That’s the song and dance that Eve bought from the serpent who had been taken over by Satan. Over the past few centuries we have been led by Satan and men who either knowingly or unknowingly softened, sweetened, and perverted the gospel of good news to make us believe that ‘.well, yes there is a God but really it is us, and we can do what is best for ourselves because we are such wonderful people. I see that more and more from not only journalist, and newpapers and television, but from pulpits in different ways. Adam was created by God able to do either right or wrong, he just didn’t have any law from God to obey, before God put him and his wife Eve in that Paradise called Eden. Where there is no law that is no sin, so Adam remained sinless as long as he did not eat of the ‘Tree of the knowledge of good and evil’.

When Eve obeyed Satan and then caused Adam to disobey they both died. They began the process of aging and death physically and were immediately driven out of the presence of God and out of Paradise. They had become God’s enemy and they had children who were born dead in trespass and sin with no way to commune with our Holy God. You and I were born under the wrath of God because of our sin nature that we got from Adam. We were born dead in trespass and sin (Ephesians 2:1-5). Now what can a dead man do’ Have you ever seen a dead man do anything’ Dead men do not decide to do anything except remain dead, so in our deadness, we would have sinned against our God until we died physically and then been consigned to hell for eternity’But God (Halleluiah)’.But God, who is rich in mercy made the only way for mankind to be forgiven of his sin and made fit for heaven.

He sent His One and Only Son, Jesus Christ to take the place of those who would obey Him, and we must come to the point that we see ourselves as gross sinners with no help or hope, who will cast themselves in faith on Christ’s work and Person, and receive that new birth , which produces a new creature who has the old things past away and all thing become new. A new creature who has the desire and the power to live without sin. (Ephesians 2:10; Romans 6:1-14; 2nd Corinthians 5:17; 2nd Corinthians 5:21.

How can a sinner, who has no connection or means of knowing God, save himself’ Well, the answer is that He cannot and he will not. Now, many attempt to buy fire insurance, and by that I mean they know that most people today believe that simply belonging to a church group makes a person a Christian, and so many join the church to appear to be good people, or to make business connections, or to be part of a group, but joining a church is of no benefit unless you have been born again. Going to church is good but not unless you are ready to die to self and live for God. There is no such thing as baptismal regeneration, many believe that if they were baptized, that they have a ticket to heaven.

There is no way other than through Faith in Jesus Christ. Faith and obedience always come together and if you have true faith you are obedient to all that Christ commands you to do.(John 14:15, 21-24). I’m afraid that cheap grace preaching has caused many to believe that they are saved, just because they at one time made a profession of faith. It is not the profession as much as it is the Possession of Christ that makes a person eligible for heaven. We have to be like the Apostle Paul who professed in Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I but Christ lives in me and the life I now live, I live by the faith of Him who loved me and gave Himself for me.”

Can you say that and mean it. If you can then you are probably saved but if not and you are still breathing ‘.now is the time because you never know when God will call you out of this world. I have said a lot and I don’t want you to miss it, so I will cease right here by asking you to be honest with yourself about your life, and if you are not sure of your salvation’go back and reread all the scriptures I listed for you. Me nor no other preacher can save a soul’it takes God and He only deals with honest people’,

Until next time,

may God bless and keep you
