Bible Lesson 197

“For the Grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.”

Titus 2:11-12

“I remember a rough parable of Luther’s, grafted on an older legend, which runs somewhat in this fashion??A man’s heart is like a foul stable. Wheelbarrows and shovels are of little use, except to remove some of the surface filth, and to litter all the passages in the process. What is to be done with it? “Turn the Elbe into it” says he. The flood will sweep away all the pollution. Not my own efforts, but the influx of the pardoning, cleansing grace which is in Christ will wash away the accumulation of years, and the ingrained evil which has stained every part of my being.”

Alexander MacLaren.

This month we will occupy ourselves and our Bibles with learning more about the Amazing Grace of our Lord. That Grace that works mightily in our regeneration and Salvation; and then follows us through every step of our lives to make sure we know the way and have the power to walk in the way that God has planned for us.

As we move into the study of Grace we should know why Grace is so important to those who come to know themselves as sinners, fit only for the fires of hell. God is the God of Grace, not the kind of grace that we understand as sinners, but grace that flows from heaven in the form of Him who has the power to put us all to death in any form that he chooses; but because He is Gracious and merciful, He chose rather to save us than to destroy us.

That is the only kind of Grace that would have done what God did, which was to (In the Second Person of the God- head, Jesus Christ) come and sacrifice Himself on the cross in place of you and I, if we will see our sinfulness, cry out because of our desperate condition, and yield to His Lordship, and gladly follow and obey Him.

I’m afraid that we in America, have missed God’s Grace completely as we found ourselves involved in what we like to call, modernity. You know what I mean, we are involved to the extreme with face-book, twitter, the latest thing in smart phones and I-pads and the like.

We have come to the point that we do not have time, nor will we make time to study our Bibles, and to be alone with our Creator God. In following after the latest Apple product (phone, etc) we have become involved in high and heady subjects on these phones, etc, and we have not prepared ourselves to know what God would have us to do. We have been trained by the media to act like cattle as we are allowed to post things that may sound good to sinners (children of the devil), but are an abomination to God. We have the means to say things that we will be held accountable to God for having thought and said to others. We have to realize that regardless of how we muddy the water about sin (and I mean any sin, but especially in our time, the sin of homosexuality), sin is sin and hell is hot and there is going to be a judgment.

We seem to think that if we can get a group together that wants to say the same thing and believe that sin (including homosexuality) is not an offense to God that the majority wins. Listen to me now, it does not matter how you ‘feel’ about any sin, God never changes and He has spoken clearly about the sins that we attempt to dignify today. It does not matter how you or anyone else “feels’, or what the Supreme court rules, or what takes place ‘.. ‘right is right when nobody is right and wrong is wrong when everybody is wrong’. It does not matter what the President, the Pope, Your Preacher, or your State says, God is going to judge sin that He has warned us about.

Some of the hottest corners of hell are reserved for those who bloviate about things that they do not understand. God is gracious but God is also Sovereign, He alone decides who receives His gift of Grace, and we know that only those who obey Him will ever know God’s Grace and Mercy. If you think that God is unaware of what you post on the internet, and how you feel, or say you feel about God, and about what His Inerrant Bible has to say about any subject then you are not the recipient of God’s Grace. However, God is, as I said Sovereign, so if you comply and submit to His Lordship in your life and begin to know what the Bible says and obey it, then you may have a chance. There is certainly a line that you can pass where God cuts you off, and gives you over to a reprobate (debased) mind, and then you are done for and will spend your eternity in hell (Romans 1:22-28). That probably sound hateful and unkind to those who are determined to change God’s mind about their precious sin, but any preacher who loves you enough to attempt to snatch you out of hell, is doing you a great favor. You can only be saved by God’s Grace, which is undeserved mercy, so look to God, and His Son Jesus Christ, repent of all sin, and cast yourself on the Cross and person of Jesus Christ.

It seems that many people today want to think that Grace was born at the cross. They do not like the fact that the Old Testament reports the truth about God and how He deals with His creatures who sin. In the Old Testament, God dealt directly with people who sinned. His installation of Animal sacrifices for sin, was to teach the people that there was a cost for sinfulness. Animals were the measure of prosperity back then, and when a person who sinned was required to sacrifice an animal, it diminished his wealth. Continuance of sin requires the ultimate sacrifice for us and that is double death, physical and spiritual death. We are consigned to hell when resurrected, and separated from God forever in the torments of hell. Whenever a sinner reads or hears about God they must make a choice to either believe what they know and turn from their sin to God in repentance and obedience, or be lost forever in the darkness and pain of hell. So what some people never realize is that the word Grace, is not an automatic ‘Get out of Jail Free card’.

Just because God sent His Sinless Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross to redeem some people from hell, means nothing to those who do not love Christ enough to obey Him. Everyone who is ever saved is ‘saved by Grace through Faith’ and that is not of ourselves, it is a gift from God. The question now becomes how does that work’ First, those who are ever saved were elected (chosen) before the foundation of the World (Ephesians 1:3-4).It was by Grace and because God is Sovereign in everything especially in His Great Salvation, that any of us was elected or chosen by God. It certainly was not because of anything that we would do or be or have in this life. No, we were chosen because God chose to choose us! Now it is significant to know that God did not put any kind of mark on those whom He chose or those who he passed over.

The only thing that marks who was elected is that they will be quickened by God, brought back from death in trespass and sin, to Spiritual life. God plants a Spirit in us that can know and seek God. God elected a people in eternity past, that He will save in time, and predestined us to become in the image of Christ. God does that first by quickening the dead person (Ephesians 2:1-3), then He Calls us to Himself through Christ. This is an effectual call that cannot be denied, God then justifies, and glorifies us (Romans 8:28-30). God gives everyone a general call, which is the proclamation of His Word and Will, the Bible. This makes everyone guilty who does not respond because, we have not known His Word, and if we did we rejected truth. God’s Grace was not born at the Cross of Christ as some like to believe. God has always been gracious and we read about it in Genesis 6:8, where Noah found Grace in the eyes of the Lord. God sees everything from the standpoint of eternity. He has always been and He is not bound by time, as we are here as His Creatures on His Creation.

He does not wonder if there is going to be a storm in your town today, He already knows it. He is not concerned about who the next King or President will be, He already has decided it. He knows everything down to and including how many hairs there are on your head and He marks the fall of the lowly sparrow (Matthew 10:29-30). God knows everything about everything, and He knows what you will think or say before you say it. We know very little, even those who us who think we know just about everything. Whatever we know, we know apprehensively and unsurely. We may know something today and find tomorrow that it was all wrong. God knows everything and Is Omniscience, He is the Source of all power, and is Omnipotent, He is not subject to the lines and walls and things that we are subject to, because He is Omnipresent.

He is The First Source, nothing exists that He did not create. We can create nothing. Oh, we think we can, but all we can do is to take something that God has made and form it into something for our own use and we are very restricted in that. When all is said and done, and we come to the place that we can be honest with ourselves before God we are nothing without Him. We can do nothing, say nothing, have nothing, and even draw our next breath without Him. He is gracious and merciful, so our only option if we want to have an eternity worth living is to bend our knees and confess Him as Lord of all in our lives. I wish I could explain God’s Sovereign Grace in such a way you could understand, but all I can do it to write down the truths of His Word. God tells us in His Word the Bible, that if we read the Bible and understand that it is God speaking to us, that in that knowledge we may find Faith. Grace and Faith come together. Romans 10:17 tells us “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”

If you are ever saved it will be because God never forgets his creatures and He knows where you are and what you will believe, and if you really desire to be saved and become a member of God’s Family. God does not issue anything like ‘fire insurance’ which is what so many have sought from God. We come to God as His Creature, not His Child, because Satan has a large family also, and they will continue to do whatever Satan tells them to do (John 8:42-44). If you are tired of sin and what it has done in your life, are you burdened down worrying about impending death, take your burdens to the Lord and leave them there. Remember God is Gracious and Merciful and His Grace is amazing. Think about the old Hymn, Amazing Grace, and sing it to God. “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me, I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.” If you want to be free you must first open you physical eyes and ask God to open your spiritual eyes. Begin to seek God with every fiber of your being, read your Bible, seek out God-called men and ask them question. Never give up because those who have given up and are friends of the World, are the enemies of God.

Until next time,

may God bless and keep you
