Bible Lesson 214

The Christ of the Cross. John 14:6

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6

“Christians are supernaturally and livingly incorporated with Christ. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus: that new creation is accomplished in our union with His person. This is our spiritual state: a “new man” has been created in righteousness and true holiness”
A.W. Pink

This month we will look into our Bible and get a clear view of Jesus Christ, who was God in the flesh, as He walked here on the earth. There are not many who have not, at least, heard about that Incarnation there in the town of Bethlehem of Judah over2000 years ago. That Baby that was born there was One of a kind birth.

There had never been any before, and never again will that kind of Glorious Virgin Birth, happen. As that baby was laid in a manger, God himself was laid there. The Baby that laid there, was the 2nd Person of the Trinity, who had always been and will always be, He was eternal, but was offered as a gift to sinners who would obey Him.

He had agreed before the foundation of the world to be the sacrificial Lamb of God. He came to earth on a mission which was to demonstrate God to mankind.

We, as humans, have difficulty in understanding Spiritual things especially those who are lost, sinners. Jesus Christ demonstrates what God was like in the same form (flesh) that we live in. Jesus Christ was the agent of God in creation. (John 1:1-18). It is important to know the Christ of the Cross, so that we can properly attach proper significance and the crucial aspects of it.

There are several facts that have been forgotten about that birth. First it was a birth that was initiated by the Holy Spirit, who overshadowed Mary, a young Jewish virgin, who had never known a man. It was a virgin birth, that had been prophesied in the Old Testament. (Isaiah 7:14-15; Matthew 1:21-23).

He came to be the suffering servant, who would die nailed to a cross that He did not deserve (Luke 23-27). He fulfilled the law by living 33 years in the same flesh that you and I have without sinning. (2nd Corinthians 5:21). He healed the sick, raised the dead, restored sight to blind eyes, endured the ridicule and attacks of sinner, and went to the cross to die to save those who were His enemies. (Matthew 4:23-24; John 11:38-44; Luke 22:63-65; Romans 5:6-

I hope that we can understand who Jesus Christ was, why He came and what happened to Him after He arrived on the earth. The Bible tells us that he grew up in a family with Mary as His mother and Joseph as his earthly father. He was God and man in one body, He was like you and I. He could laugh and play, help with the chores, and play with others. For the first part of His life He lived just as any other boy his age would have, only he was more connected with God. As a man He began the completion of His mission from God the Father. He began to preach and He preached a message that was as offensive to people then as it is to people in our day. He preached repentance, and that meant to them that they were wrong in their religious lives. He told them just that and they rejected it pretty much like people do today.

It does us no good to preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified, unless we set that against what and how all men who are saved, must believe. Let’s talk a little bit about believe, many in our day will think that believe means an intellectual nod toward the subject: but the word in the Greek, the language of most of the new Testament, that was translated believe, means much more than that. It means believe, but it also means trust and obey in the sense that we are to obey what we believe. So, the question becomes what do I believe and what do you believe’ We should know that we should believe the truths that are found in the inspired Word of God, the Bible. That means we must believe things about ourselves and things about God. We have already discussed many things (Truths), that the Bible says about Jesus.

We know that He is the Only Begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ. We know that He is eternal, and has always been, just like the Father. We know that He was in the creation, having created everything that is, and nothing was made without Him. He has always been the Lamb of God because God had known before the creation that Adam would fall, and so God had set the remedy in place before Adam was created. We know that He was virgin born to Mary, who was a virgin and had never known a man. We know that He was born to die and even as He lay in the manger the shadow of the cross lay over Him. We know that He never sinned, and that He did not run from the cross and all that went with it. He took the cross that was supervised by God the Father.

We are told In Acts 2:23-24, “Him being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified and put to death. Whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it”. We know that all of us are born dead in trespass and sin, and are under the wrath of God, (Ephesians 2:1-3). We know that we, as sinners, are without help or hope unless and until, God intervenes in our lives to rebirth us and make us new creatures ‘in Christ’, who are then, Saints. Ephesians 2:1-10-13; 2nd Corinthians 5:17; Romans 1:7). We have been told by God in His Inspired, inerrant Word, that Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. We know that we are saved by Grace through faith, and that not of ourselves it is the gift of God. (Romans 10:17; Ephesians 2:8-9).

I suppose that the best advise that I can give anyone who is interested in Salvation, is that it does not come if you are searching for fire insurance. That is the wrong reason to desire salvation. Those who are saved will never go to hell, because that is what Jesus Saves us from. Everyone who does not know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will go to hell, but those who have bowed the knee and confessed Him as Lord, know Him as their savior. That means that we love Him more than we love our spouse, children, parents or anyone or anything else in the world. (Luke 14:26-33). We might as well understand that we are born into the world having the nature of our great grandfather Adam. We have a nature that is such that we love to sin. God will deal with that nature; either here on this earth or at the Judgment and what the Adamic nature will gain us is condemnation and hell for eternity. God has done everything that is required for people to be saved. He gave His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ who took the cross for those who would obey all that God has commanded as they live out their lives ‘in Christ’.

Multitudes will die and go to hell without ever considering their fate, They are so busy with worldly things and having fun and all that goes with life here on the earth that they die never having come to the realization that they are in trouble come Judgment day. Heaven is a place for perfection and God has given us His Perfect Son, Jesus Christ that we find as our ‘safe place’ as we come to know the truth of the Gospel. ‘In Christ’, is the only perfect place and only those who have been put to death, buried with Christ, and resurrected in Christ spiritually will be perfect. (Romans 6:1-14). In true salvation we experience just what is given in Romans 6:1-14, and we are separate from sinners, separate from those who will not surrender to the Lordship of Christ. We are holy, which means that we are separated from the world and to God, for His use. We are one with Christ, and our lives indicate that we are like Christ.

The Christ of the Cross came from Heaven through the womb of a Jewish maid that had never known a man. Her name was Mary and she carried the incarnate Christ until He was delivered in a town called Bethlehem of Judea. He was raised as young men in that time were raised. He was born under the Law and lived under the law until He had fulfilled every aspect of the law. He never sinned, never deviated from His eternal appointment on the cross, where He became the author of eternal salvation to all those who would obey Him. Jesus Christ, the God-man went to the cross as the perfect man, one who had never sinned. His sacrifice was necessary for several reasons, first, the sacrifice always had to be perfect, and there was not a man who was perfect, so God sent His Son Jesus Christ to be the sacrificial lamb. As He hung on the cross, He became sin, having taken on the sins of all those who would ever take His Yoke and obey Him. He died for your sin and mine and that alone would have been many sins. Sins that would have damned us to hell for eternity, but Jesus took them all and suffered and died and was buried in a borrowed tomb; but on the third day; Thank God, He arose as evidence that God had accepted His sacrifice on our behalf. That was the only sacrifice that would ever be needed or offered for sin and we will either bow to that Christ or we will spend our eternity in the torments of hell.

I am not the one who is advising you of your predicament with God, He has left us His Inspired Word, the Bible, that warns us of things to come. Jesus was taken off the cross, and buried to arise the third day, and He carried the keys to death, hell and the grave, on His belt, so to speak. He confronted Satan and defeated Him on the cross. He won, and we won if we will obey Him.

Let me ask you in closing, Do you know Him’ I don’t mean do you know some verse of scripture about Him, but, do you really know Him, and is He living through you, the life that He lived here on the earth. Have you Professed your love for Him and your submission to His Lordship in your life’ Do you wake up daily to serve Him in what He has said you should do’ If you haven’t; I recommend to you that you begin a study of the Bible to find Him and a faith in Him, that will bring about the radical change in the way you believe and act. Study of the Bible equips you to know Him and to serve Him, so, study as long and as hard as it takes until He finds you. Think on these things.

Until next time,

may God bless and keep you
