Bible Lesson 216

“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

“The soul that is without Christ, is an enemy to the God of peace, a stranger to the covenant of peace incappable of the word of peace, an alien to the way of peace, there is no peace to the wicked, saith my God. Isaiah 57:21.

Isaac Ambrose

This month we will look into the Word of God to find the position and state of those who have looked unto Jesus, who is the Author and Finisher of our faith. What does the phrase that says that we are to Look unto Jesus, mean’ First it means a look that is cast with salvation as its ultimate goal. A look that is directed by knowledge of the Bible, about who Jesus is, and what He has done for mankind.

It is much more than saying, that you have looked unto Jesus; because it makes the difference between eternal life and eternal death and suffering.
There is no other subject that we will encounter that is so pressing upon the soul of lost men and rewarding to the individual as a constant looking unto Jesus; because He is the key to salvation, having suffered and died in the place of sinners who were his enemy by nature.

We can consider the Apostle Paul in his dealing with the Corinthians when he stated that He “Counted all things loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord” Ephesians 3:14-21; Philippians 3:7-11; 1stCorinthians 1:23. The Apostle Paul considered, and you will too, if you ever take that look unto Jesus Christ, that Jesus was worth more than all the riches and awards and applause of the world. Only in Looking unto Jesus as the only way to have a right standing with your Creator, Sustainer and Savior of your eternal soul.

Jesus is The Only Begotten Son of God, The God-man. The Messiah, The Savior, The Redeemer, The Bright and Morning Star, The Bread of heaven, The Rose of Sharon. Lord, The Word of God, and many more; but He is the Friend of those who have looked unto Him and committed their lives to obeying Him. John 15:13-14.

For the sinner, and we are all born sinners, unfit for communion with God, Jesus is the sweetest name that we can hear, because it speaks of the one who found us as slaves to sin, children of the devil, under the wrath of our Holy and Just God, Jehovah.

The wages of sin is death, but because God is Gracious and merciful, Jesus Christ substituted Himself on the cross that we all richly deserved to be nailed to, and He suffered the just penalty for every sin that we had committed, bled and died, was buried in a borrowed tomb, but on the third day He arose, just as He had promised. Because Jesus did what He did and God raised Him from the grave, we can now have a sanctified hope for the power that raised Him up will raise us up on that day. We will either bend the knee and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord or we will miss heaven and reap hell. Jesus is the ladder between heaven and earth. The only Mediator between God and man, He is our happiness, our security, our power, our Rock and our fortress.

Why would any man not seek to Look unto Him that is our all and in all’ Jesus is known as Christ, the only Mediator, Lord, Son of God, and Emmanuel, He is the reconciler of man and God, He was the God-man, God with us; and it is our gospel privilege, and our gospel duty to look unto Jesus, which means Savior, He was sent to save His people from their sin. Do you know Jesus’ Is He your Lord and Savior’ If He is not Lord of all in your life, He is not Lord at all in your life. There are no set-asides with Jesus, it is in the parlance of our day “His way or the Highway.” Matthew 12:30.

Whosoever has felt the call of God on His heart and soul, can come to Jesus; however, they must come with the understanding that they must come owning their sin and sick of it, loving Him more that they love anyone or anything on the earth, having counted the cost and determined to die to self and live in Christ, and having saving faith which is a gift of God. Matthew 1:21; Matthew 16:24-27; Hebrews 11:6; Luke 14:26-33; Ephesians 2:1-10.

We might as well know on the front end of our message, that no man will ever be saved on the credit, we are saved by Grace because God is gracious; thru faith which is the gift of God and not of us. Additionally, once saved, we will reject the idea that we can worship God with our pocket change and in our spare time. Being a Christian is not something that we do in church on Sunday, it is a full time life-style that is energized by the Holy Spirit living in us. Jesus never failed to warn those who came to Him wanting to be His disciples. For instance, He called several of his disciples away from what fed their families and made them the money that they lived on. He told a Scribe (lawyer), who came to Him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go”; Jesus answered Him by saying, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” The Scribe would have been well off and would have a nice home and all that goes with success, but Jesus could not and would not offer Him a life of ease if he followed Jesus. What would you or we have done in that situation’ There was another disciple who said to Jesus, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”

Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury the dead.” That sound rough to our generations who have been coddled and been taught that we deserve better than others. However, Jesus was on a mission and if you are saved as you read this lesson, you have a mission also and it is simply an extension of the mission that Christ was on. Our final destiny will not include the cross, which His did, and since Christ died on the cross there is no need of any other. Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, took our place on the cross and suffered for every sin we committed or will commit. He did that in order to change the world; and change the world He did. There has never been another that even came close to Christ. None who changed the eternal destinies of so many people. No one ever influenced, for the better the world we live in. and there is no God before Him. If we are honest Jesus Christ has been the corner-stone for every great civilization, every great church, every great nation, since He walked on this earth.

No man has ever cast such an all-encompassing shadow over the whole world. Jesus has taught us to love Him and to love our fellow man. Every country in the world is better today than they were before Christ came on the scene. Jesus was Apolitical, he was neither Democrat or Republican. He was not liberal at least in the way that we think about liberal, nor was He conservative.

He was God who created the worlds and all we know and He has set the perfect system which is based on respect for one another, and following in obedience all of His commandments. We have made a mess out of our discipleship as we have failed to study His Word to find His way forward in everything that we do. We have forgotten God and built up idols of flesh, knowing that the flesh is weak. We are told by God who created us that we should walk in the Spirit, which is the Holy Spirit of God. We must return to obedience to God or be cast off like trash to be burned in the Valley of Hinnom.

We are guilty of failing to ‘Look unto Jesus’, and it has been a disaster for us. We have looked off to self, idols that we build in our minds, riches, position, fame, and all the rest. The moment we take our eyes off looking unto Jesus, we fall into Satan’s trap. Sadly, all we have to do to escape Satan’s trap and come back to Jesus, is to stop looking and loving and believing anything that Satan and his minions have to offer. We can look all the way back to the Garden of Eden (Paradise) and find Adam and Eve, who would have lived forever, had they not took their eyes off of Jesus who was with them in the garden.

We can talk and explain, argue, fight, scream and yell, all we want to when America took their eyes off of Jesus Christ, they caused a falling away; and we are now mired in all kind of sin and danger because we wanted to make fools out of ourselves in always fighting back at Christ and what He would have the nation to do. Christ had one call while he walked on this earth for a time, and that was “follow me”. Many who were wise followed Him to the end, and many today are looking unto Jesus for the ability to walk every day in His foot-prints. There is no peace, no hope, no help, for anyone who does not keep Jesus Christ and His Work on the cross as their focus.

We have just finished an election, in which people who care about the direction that our country is going. The heart land of America voted for a man who had his head on straight. A man who saw, just as God did in the beginning of the world, as He confused tongues and created borders. America has borders and we must protect ourselves by protecting our borders. God had the Jews to build walls on which there were placed watchmen, who were always scanning the horizon to keep dissidents out. That is still a good idea. Don’t be deceived by those who have an axe to grind and care nothing about the ultimate cost to you and I as they use the available media and empty words to make us give up the fight. This kind of thing should be a call to arms for the followers of Christ. This is not a war of guns and swords but it is a Spiritual war, that we the true obedient Christians can and must win. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. (Philippians 4:13). Too many in our time tend to want to skim over, peruse, and glance at the Word of God, rather than to read, meditate, reread, study, cross-reference, and glean to find all that is available to us of truth in the Bible. The Bible is God inspired Word to mankind, breathed by God to Holy Men of old, protected by the living God and without error. Read it, believe it and stand on it. Keep your eyes on Jesus because He is the only Mediator between God and man, and that is no other name given among men whereby we may be saved.

Until next time,

may God bless and keep you
