Bible Lesson 219

“Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded Grace abounded much more. So that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Grace can be best described as, ‘God who justifieth the ungodly.’

In this Lesson, we will look into the Word of God and ask The God of the Word to help us to understand the wonderful world of Grace. We would like to understand that Grace, that abounds over sin, which is evil and dark and dangerous to men’s souls. Grace that is available, but never understandable to its beneficiaries. Julia Johnson wrote of God’s Grace and penned the words, “Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt. Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured, There where the blood of the Lamb was spilt.

Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within.” I expect that none of us really have grasped the greatness of Our God’s Grace. We all probably know that it is by Grace through faith that we are saved; and we should know that it is entirely due to the fact that our God is a God of Grace, that we are not destined to spend our eternity in hell.

Some of us will, because people, for more reasons than one, just will not give God’s Grace a hearing. They push off serious attempts to get them to read the Bible, or attend a church where the Truth is preached, or even sit still to hear a good friend testify of God’s Grace. It does not seem important, or it requires too much thinking and time, and a million other reasons that are worthless.

Those of us who are the recipients of God’s Amazing Grace know that it has changed our lives, and turned us away from lawlessness to God and righteousness. Still we miss many of the aspects of God’s Grace, such things as God undeserved mercies that we receive from the hand of God every day.

Things like provisions, and that includes health and wisdom and food, family, friends, and everything that makes life on the earth more pleasant. Provision is a wonderful gift of God’s Grace, and yet God goes over provision to His Protection of His Children. It might cause us to change our lives, if we would stop and think about all the things that we do every day. Think about what you do every day, about where you go and how many cars could at any moment swerve into you, head-on, and send you out into eternity. Then ask yourselves, if you know for sure that you are prepared every moment to meet the righteous Judge.

Over the past decades, with the entrance of first, humanism, then liberalism, antinomianism, and other ‘isms’, that humans readily bought into we have arrived at a point in time where most people know little or nothing about the Word and Will of Almighty God. If we do not have Biblical knowledge then we can profess, argue, fight and fuss, but we cannot be saved. The Holy Bible is the place where we find the route toward salvation, and if we don’t read, study and meditate on the Scriptures then we will not be saved (Romans 10:17). That scripture says; “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God”.

That means if you have never heard enough truth from the Word of God (either by reading it for yourself or hearing it from a faithful preacher), you are not likely to be called by God.

What we must know and understand in contest, is that God has taken the only Action that is ever required to save any person’s soul. He planned it before the foundation of the world, and then, in time, He sent His only begotten Son, God in the flesh, to this sin-sick world to take upon himself the sins of every person who would obey Him, be nailed to the cross that they deserved to be nailed to, and suffered and died to pay their sin debt, be buried in a borrowed grave, and rise again from the dead on the third day, and forty days later ascended back into heaven from whence He came, and sits now at the right hand of God to make intercession for those who are His people.( Matthew 1:21; John 3:16-21; Hebrews 5:8-9). Will everyone be saved in the end’ Absolutely, positively, NOT!

God has inspired Holy men of old to write to instruct us concerning who will be saved and only those who are yoked to Christ will be saved. There is nothing that anyone can do to save themselves, but the door seems to be open to those who will learn at least as much about the Inspired, inerrant Word of God, as they know about their favorite T.V. programs, or the stats on their favorite ball team, or the face-book, or Oprah, or Dr. Phil, or the latest book by their favorite writer and on adnauseam. There is one way, and one way only, to be saved and that is by the blood and death of Jesus Christ who was God in the flesh. How does a person get the benefit of that blood’ They read the Bible and understand exactly what it says and then do what it says.

We knock, seek and ask, which means that we have enough persistence to gain Bible knowledge, and we then stand on ground that may produce salvation. Yes, we knock, seek, and ask, and we do that diligently until we feel the call of God which we find to be undeniable, we go to great length, and spend much time reading, meditating, studying, praying, and watching. (Matthew 7:7; Hebrews 11:6). Salvation is something that we cannot begin. It always begins with Christ and ends with Christ. In fact, we cannot nor, would we ever attempt to be saved; because we are under the Wrath of God in the flesh. It simply does not register on us until we begin to see what God did in order to save any of us. Actually we are all born, dead in trespass and sin, and enemies of God.

The Apostle Paul when writing to the Church at Ephesus in Chapter One and verse One, addresses that congregation as ‘The Saints, and faithful in Christ Jesus’ and that means that he is writing to those in Ephesus who were born again Christians. But then in Chapter two and verse One, he tells these same people’. “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sin. In which you once walked according to the course of this world, and according to the prince of the power of the, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved.”).

Now the question becomes; what prevents most folks, who over the years believed that they can simply jump up some Sunday or Wednesday or any other day and walk the church aisle and join some group and think that they saved themselves’ Apparently nothing, prevents them from joining the church, however that cannot save anyone. Joining a church makes you a church member; but being yoked with Christ is the only way to be saved. So, how do we get yoked with Christ’ There is only one way and that is to be drawn (dragged), by The Father to the Son, (John 6:44). (I say dragged there, because the same word that was used in John 6:44 and translated drawn, was used in Acts 16:19 and, translated as ‘dragged’.

So many, who have been taught a Sunday School level of The Bible are unprepared to face what every truly saved person has faced, when God turned the light on for them and brought them to the Cross of His Son Jesus Christ. No man, woman or child has ever stood there in the light of God’s Glory and saw what His Son looked like after sinners had put Him to death, and for your information, those sinners were simply tools of God who oversaw and supervised the Cross of His Son, Jesus Christ (Acts 2:22-24). That was the only way that anyone could be saved, and so God loved those that He chose before the foundation of the world, so much that He sent His Only Begotten Son to take the place of all who would obey Him and these had their name written in the Lamb’s book before the foundation of the world. (Luke 10:20; Philippians 4:3).

I suppose that those who have thought themselves good enough to stand before God, think that simply because they were never charged with murder or rape or robbery, of some similar sin, that they had something that God could use; however, if the Father ever draws or drags them to the Cross and opens their understanding, they will see that they have nothing but sin to offer. The only word that can be spoken to God are; “Nothing in my had I bring, simply to Thy cross I cling.” The Christ of the Cross, after He was dead, buried, risen and ascended to sit at the right hand of the Father, is the period after Salvation. The Father makes the path to salvation clear in His Word the Bible, and there can be nothing added nor taken away. No human being that ever lived was exempt from obedience to God and all that He has said to us in His Word. Can we obey all that God has for us’ We most certainly can, that is ‘ if we desire Him above all other creatures or things in the world.

We are to love Christ more than we love father or mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and our own life; or we cannot be a disciple of Christ. We cannot love possessions, or job, or position or anything more than Christ and if we cannot or will not submit to that we will never be saved. That is the cost of salvation, we must be ready to be all in with Christ or else we are scattering. Many have been taught by almost saved preachers, that we are all just sinners, and everything that we do is sin and we are helpless to change that. How absurd! We think that the God who spoke, and everything we know was created; who has the issues of life and death and who keep the worlds that He created in precise orbits, speed and paths to keep life safe for us, cannot control the very dirt that He used to create man.

In order to understand grace properly we must look at the Law, which sets for us the attributes of God. God is perfect and He demands that we who are adopted into His family are perfect. We become spiritual being in salvation, but we hold that being in pots of clay, and we all know that the flesh is weak, so in true salvation, the children of God are given a new law, which is the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:2-4). In Christ which is where every truly Christian, those who have discovered that they are Sinners, blind, unheeding and under the wrath of God. Then hearing the undeniable call of God upon their lives, have repented and turned to God, is reborn (born from above), made a new creature in Christ and adopted into the family of God.

The Law of God can be compared to road signs on our superhighways. They don’t deal with traffic, but with sin, and they are constantly warning people that God requires a rebirth, and if we ignore that law sign, we put ourselves in jeopardy of meeting the Judgment without our lawyer (Jesus Christ). The law can be found in the Bible and it is constantly crying out to wayward sinners, that God has The Way to be spared the penalty of Judgment and it is that they must recognize their sinful way, and seek the face of God in salvation. God will judge every man according to his works, so run a check on your life, what kind of life have you lived’ Do you have that intimate relationship with Christ’ Can you look back to a time in your life when you had an experience with God and saw a radical change in your life. Do you love Christ more than you love anyone or anything in this world’ If not, then this lesson is a law sign for you. Turn to God away from sin and serve God!

Perhaps it would be beneficial for us to insert right here that there is going to be a universal Judgement of the world. We don’t know when it will be and so it could be today or years from now. There is a Judgment at the time of death, and Hebrews 9:27 warns us that “it is appointed unto man once to die, but after this the Judgment”. Many today, have been taught that when you die, you are dead and finished; but God say that is not correct, there will be a Judgment, and it will be on what you did about your sin. If you were born again and faithful to Christ Jesus, you will be Judged but not for condemnation, instead it will be for blessings. Jesus Christ saves sinners from hell and all of its torments, but salvation is available only while you live here on the earth.

Grace is shown to those who have real faith in Jesus Christ and trust Him and His work on the cross to be all they need to save them. Grace is defined as undeserved merit or the favor of God, Grace is the way to an inheritance in Heaven. God did not become gracious at the cross, God has always been gracious. He shows us His Grace in the creation and, the beauty of His creation. Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. (Genesis 6:8). Lot found favor or grace and mercy with God as he escaped from Sodom, (Genesis 19:19). This writer found mercy with God, as He read and reread and studied the Bible and meditated and sought to know all he could by hearing, and reading sermons. You can find mercy and favor and Grace from God; but only by knowing God’s word for yourself (Bible study), and following God plan, as you walk in the footsteps of Jesus Christ.

God the Father and God the Son are both full of Grace and they wait to be favorable to those who will die too self and live in Christ. Be sure to read and think on these things, as you study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman who needs not be ashamed. (2nd Timothy 2:15). Remember God is always Gracious, but there will come a time when time will run out to receive God’s Grace.

Until next time,

may God bless and keep you
