Bible Lesson 267

CONTENDING FOR THE FAITH.  (Jude 3-4)

“BELOVED, WHILE I WAS VERY DILIGENT TO WRITE TO YOU CONCERNING OUR COMMON SALVATION, I FOUND IT NECESSARY TO WRITE TO YOU EXHORTING YOU TO CONTEND EARNESTLY FOR THE FAITH WHICH WAS ONCE DELIVERED TO THE SAINTS. FOR CERTAIN MEN HAVE CREPT IN UNOTICED, WHO LONG AGO WERE MARKED OUT FOR THIS CONDEMNATION.”

This month we will open our minds and our hearts and seek the truth about

  1. There is a faith once for all delivered to the saints.
  2. This faith is worth contending for.
  3. The faith is repeatedly threatened from within the church by professing Christians.
  4. It is the duty of every believer to contend for the faith.

With that understood, let’s ask the Father-God to guard and guide us as we contend for the Faith.

This word “delivered” implies a revelation of God’s mind unto men. It implies that God has revealed and expressed His will and given the faith (through the process of inspiration) unto the church to believe.  The Message is clear: The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ must be so precious to us that we are willing to “contend earnestly for the faith” in an ongoing way. There are enemies that are concentrated against the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and if we do not keep close to Jesus, and keep pursuing the path He has chosen for us.

Let me be clear right here about our point. The visible church of our day, in too many cases has lowered God’s standard for saving men’s souls. We have taken people into our members and our midst that are not qualified to be on the church role. You cannot be a child of God, until you have died to self and been born that New Creature “In Christ”. So be sure you absorb what we are attempting to tell you. God has laid down clear rules for mankind concerning how we contend for the faith.

Many of us may never have contended for the faith, so first off let’s make it clear that to contend means to work and struggle and wrestle for lost souls. The Lord commands us to Go: not to go out and play church, or knock-on doors to invite people to come to our services on Sunday, but to go out, reach out, and speak the truth to anyone and everyone who will listen. You may ask who we are to go too; and that is, to any and everyone who will listen. God will accept the fact that you may  not know what to say; but He says that He will give you the words to speak when you obey His command to go. Jude wrote to encourage all Christians to “contend” for; not to fight or argue about, but to contend for “the Faith”. The word “contend” means to stand firm on, or defend the truth about God, about His Son, Jesus Christ, and about the Holy Spirit. Or Do your best (in His power) to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth). None of us was saved to lay back and take it easy. We are soldiers of the cross, and we have the armor of God to protect us as we go against the devil and his minions everyday.

Most of us have or once had jobs, and those jobs required that we obeyed certain rules. Some of you probably still have rules that you were required to abide by. In the military we had many rules and a military unit that knows what it is supposed to do, is like a machine.

Whenever I see the word contend, I think of perspiration, or as some would say sweat. Contend sounds like work or struggle in an effort to change something or someone.  Jude is warning us today about being especially watchful of what we hold as “Faith”. In Matthew 24: we are forewarned about men who would lay out what other men should do but they neglect to do those things themselves (Matthew 23:1-39). Of course we know about some who have been bitten by the T.V. bug and have long and curly hair and preach everything even (sometime the truth). That is the truth, and we don’t need to spend much time there today.

What would you say if I asked you to explain faith? Just what is FAITH?? Do you have faith? Where have you put your faith? We place our faith in many things very day. Things like what we eat, what we drink, where we sit, where we go. Many of us seem to fly blind (unable to see where were are or, where are going) . We take our souls into our own hands when we listen to others preach when we have really never read or studied the Bible for ourselves. Sadly we as a people are so interested in other things that we do not know what God has said and we just want to depend upon what someone else says. That is asking for a good dose of hell.  Satan has consigned millions of people that are skilled in the art of getting people to sin. Remember the serpent tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit? Are you eying some forbidden fruit in your world today? There is a bumper crop out there and people die and go to hell every day because they did not resist the devil’s fruit. There are two menus that we can chose our fruit from, Be sure yours comes from the Son of Man, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, the one who bore your sins to the cross and died there to purchase you back from sin and Satan. If you have not bowed your knee to Christ and His work on the cross, as being sufficient to forgive your sins and lead you to heaven, then you stand in great need today to do that. We cannot save ourselves, and no man or woman on the earth can save us! Christ is the one and only Savior. You do not have to be in a church or anywhere else to have The Lord save your soul. He is always everywhere, and anytime you decide to commit yourself to God, die to self and all of self’s plans and live for Him and in Him, He will be there. I cannot save you but I can point you to the only One who can and that is Jesus Christ. If you don’t know Him, you can if you desire Him above everyone and everything else.

Until next time,

may God bless and keep you
