Bible Lesson 48

Genesis 1:1

In this lesson, we will look to the Bible, the only place where God is revealed to man and take a stand on the truth that the Bible clearly states, and that is that Jehovah, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, is the one and the only God of this universe. Our scripture for this lesson makes it abundantly clear that it was Jehovah God who created the heavens and the earth and in the first chapter of Genesis, we find that God created all things including mankind. That being true, the creator is the owner and manager of whatever He creates, so it is Jehovah God, (Elohim), who is the true God.

Others have been held out as gods but there can be only one God, and that is the God who has revealed Himself to man over the centuries in both oral and written form. There is one revelation of God today and that is the Bible. We always have to begin our thought about Jehovah, with where He began His revelation to His creatures, and that is “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth”.

God who had always been, and will always be, at some point in eternity, created the worlds and all that we know simply by speaking them into being. He is the “first cause”. he was and He begat everything that has been begotten. That is the long and the short of it and that is to be believed by faith. Where do we get faith? We get faith as a gift of God, if and when God quickens us and brings us back from death in trespass and sin to Spiritual life.

Then we can see ourselves concerning our all-powerful, all-knowing, and present everywhere at once, Jehovah God! This God, this true God Jehovah, is a triune God (three in one), One God but manifesting Himself to a man in three distinct personalities, all of which are equal in essence. God the Father, God the Son Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Spirit, all combine to give us, One God!

Now, does everyone believe that there is one God, who is revealed to us in the Bible? No! Some do not believe in any God, other than themselves. They are normally those who have been educated beyond their intellect, and they believe that this life on the earth is the only life there will be.

How miserable and unstable and unhappy these people are. Then some belief in some lesser god’s like Buddha, Mohammed, or others of the mystic religions. Can Jehovah save any of these who worship other gods? Absolutely! It happens every day all over the world but He never saves anyone unless they renounce their false religion and submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

There are even those who believe in much of our Bible, but they, for whatever reason, deny the deity of Christ and His virgin birth. These are no better off than those who worship the lesser gods, they require a Savior and the only Savior is Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12). Do I hate or discriminate against those who worship in error? No indeed! I love them and I write the truth, to warn them of coming condemnation.

As I write these words, I am reminded of a neighbor that I used to have who did not believe in God. I had witnessed to him on numerous occasions; but he always would say, bro bob, you can?t prove to me that there is a God. One day I asked him to look around him and tell me what he saw. He began to relate things like the lake where we live, the sky and the clouds and the trees and the grass and other things that were in evidence at that time. When he finished his list of things that he saw, I asked him a simple question, “Did you create any of this”?

He readily admitted that he didn’t and I assured him that I didn’t create any of it either, so there had to be a Creator, and that would be Jehovah God. I was always slightly amused because even though he said that he didn’t believe in God, every time he went to the hospital, with heart problems that he had, he always asked me to pray for him. I had to wonder who he thought I would pray to. There have always been those who had their doubts about God, but it has been only in the last few decades that people felt some kind of power or thrill when they would say that they didn’t believe in God. I spent a career in the military and I can assure you that there is no atheist in foxholes or fire-fights or test-flight.

When the chips are down regardless of who you are or where you are, you want to talk to God. A.W. Tozer, a great old; preacher from the 20th century, said, “If every man on earth were to become an atheist, it could not affect God in any way. He is what He is in Himself without regard to any other. To believe in Him adds nothing to His perfections; to doubt Him takes nothing away”. Where do you suppose all of this brashness and shaking our fists at God come from? I believe it began when men stopped being the Prophet, Priest, and King of their homes and families and became entangled with the things of the world.

Perhaps it began when the church stopped preaching against specific sin. When preachers became more concerned with the creature than they were with the Creator. When congregations became enchanted with great and high sounding oratory, rather than sound preaching of “Thus Saith the Lord”. Maybe it began when we elected to do what Christ said He would do, and we began to focus on church-growth programs and forgot that only God can save a soul. Maybe it involves some of all of these; but something has happened to the churches, that say they represent the living God! Something has caused men to move away from our trust in and dependence in Jehovah. That has left the churches of America without God in many cases and with the authority of God.

That is obvious in the fact that we are no longer “soul-winners”. Look at the church of our day and you will find that it represents a greater proportion of the devil?s kingdom than it does of God’s Kingdom. We have been so interested in success or at least looking like we are successful that we have begun to pencil-whip the church rolls. We have no problem granting church membership to those who have no idea about God, about Christ, or even what they are agreeing to and what is expected of them. Most of the time, about all most churches want, is attendance, your tithe, and your absolute ignorance.

Only someone ignorant would ever stand before a congregation and say I believe in God when they have no idea about who God is or what He has done and revealed to us in His Word the Bible. I don’t know of many honest preachers who would not tell you, if you press them for the truth, that most of their congregation is probably unsaved. They use the word probably because they don’t know about most of their congregation and they don’t intend to ask any hard questions. That’s the truth and most of you preachers and church leaders who read this know that it is true. There is not much Biblical knowledge in most churches in our day!

Why do I stress the need for and efficacy of the knowledge of the Bible? Because there is no other place that I have found to find the true God. The Bible says of itself that the Bible is the place where we find the faith that leads to salvation. In Romans 10:17, the write says under the inspiration of God, “Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God”. God reveals Himself to mankind in the Creation, in the written Word the Bible, and the Living Word, Jesus Christ, and He tells us clearly in Romans 10:17, that to be saved we must believe in the true God. Christ is God along with the Holy Spirit, and all three personalities of our Triune God are active in man’s salvation. We come to faith only with a knowledge of the Word of God.

We spoke about those who deny that God exists a few paragraphs ago, but sometimes I am inclined to believe that those people are not only, as God says in Psalms 14:1, fools, but I tend to think that they are also liars. It is hard for me to conceive otherwise because the Bible teaches that men are born with heaven in their hearts. I don’t remember that I have ever spoken seriously with someone who said that they wanted to go to hell. We are told by God in the book of James, that even the devils believe; and tremble in their belief. Jehovah is God and there is none other (See Psalms 18:31-33; Isaiah 37:16; 43:10-13; 46:9; John 17:3; 1st Corinthians 8:4-6). It is not enough that we believe; we must believe in the right thing about the right One.

I have heard a lot of silliness in my time, but one of the silliest comments that I have heard is, well, it doesn’t matter which god you worship as long as you call him god. They mean, by that, you can worship Buddha, or Mohammed, or the god of any of the many cults around today, and as long as you call him god, you could be saved. That is ridiculous on the face of it. God requires our focused worship and will accept no other, (See 1st Corinthians 10:20-21; Revelation 9:20; Psalms 44:20-22; Psalms 46:6; Psalms 50:1-6; Psalms 62:11-12; Psalms 100:3-5; Psalms 146:5; Proverbs 26:10; Ecclesiastes 3:14; 7:13; 12:7,14; Isaiah 54:5; Jeremiah 10:10; Daniel 6:26; Matthew 1:23; Mark 12:26-32; Luke 3:8; John 1:14,10-14; John 4:24; John 14:1-7; Romans 1:16-18; 1st Timothy 2:5;).

These and many others throughout the Bible illustrate that there is only one God and unless we know Him through faith in His Son Jesus Christ, we are under the wrath of God. We are commanded to worship Him and Him alone. The first of the Ten Commandments commands His chosen Nation Israel, and us today, “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me”. God is a jealous God and will not tolerate our worship of idols or other so-called gods. God in the person of Jesus Christ restates that command for us in the New Testament. In Matthew chapter 22 and verses 36-40, we find a lawyer asking of Jesus Christ, which of the commandments are the greatest, and Jesus said to him, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind”. The question now becomes for some, how can God save us; and what does it mean to be saved?

Allow me to answer the last part of the question first, what it means to be saved consists of many points, first it means that we are rescued from condemnation and hell for eternity. It means peace with God and life on this earth that has meaning and worth, plus an inheritance in heaven that will last for eternity. Salvation means that God has rescued us from the sting and victory of death; because we begin our eternal life while we live here on the earth. We will die a physical death, but when our heart beats for the last time, we are ushered into the presence of God.

The first part of the question dealt with how God can save us, and that is easily answered, we are God’s creatures and God created Adam with a free will, and when Adam failed and fell into sin in the garden, his nature and God’s wrath passed on to all who are born after that, except for Jesus Christ, who was born but not in such a way as to inherit the nature of Adam. Christ was born of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 2:1-3 reminds us that we were born “dead in trespass and sin, and we lived in times past in the lust of the flesh, and the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others”.

Then in the gospel of John chapter 3 and verse 36, we are told: “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life: but the wrath of God abideth on him”. We were in Adam in He sinned in the garden, and we are like Adam when we are born. We loved sin and pursued it. That means all of us began our physical lives even. We were all equal?.sinners under the wrath of a Holy God, and we desperately needed a Savior. Since we are likened by the Bible as clay in the hand of the potter, we are God creation and He can do with us as He pleases. It pleased God that before the foundation of the world, before anything was created, God, who knows everything that will ever happen, because He has decreed it all, ordained Jesus Christ to bear the penalty for the sins of those that he had given as a people to Christ.

Jesus Christ would go to the cross and shed His blood and die, and be buried and on the third day arose from the grave, with the victory of sin and death. He ascended back into heaven forty days later and is now seated at the right hand of the Father, to serve as our Prophet, Priest, and King. God provided only one way for anyone to be saved and that was by faith in His Son Jesus Christ and His work on Calvary for the forgiveness of sin. Christ hung on that cross in my place and yours, that is if you have submitted and committed your life to Him until He had quenched the wrath of God against every sin of those whom God had elected to be Christ?s people.

When He cried, “It is finished”, the Father was satisfied and the Father accepted His work on Calvary for salvation. We know that is true because He was resurrected and ascended back into heaven from whence He had come. Who did God choose or elect before the foundation of the world? Only God knows and the only way any of us can know is to be able to completely give ourselves over to God through Christ. I know that he chose me because He called me by His Spirit and gave me a new life. My old man died and a new man was raised, with the old things having passed away and all things being brand new.

I know that God did not choose me because of anything that I had done or would ever do, He chose me because He chose to choose me. Did He choose you? Has God called you to come to His Son Jesus Christ for cleansing of your sin? Did you die to self and ask God to occupy the throne of your life. Are you obeying all that Christ has commanded you to do? Is there evidence that you are not the same old sinful creature that you were when you were born? Are you interested in peace with God? All of those questions will need to be answered before you can know that you were elected. It doesn’t hurt to begin to study the Word of God and cry out to Him to save you, but you have to be ready to give up your life in favor of Christ living through you.

You may say, well bro bob, I have tried reading the Bible but I can’t understand it. I say to you, keep reading and read and study it until God turns the light on, and then you will begin to understand. If you can’t read then find someone who will read it to you, or find some faithful preacher to preach it to you. Jesus Christ tells us in His Sermon on the Mount that there will be many who go to hell because it is so easy; but we will never be able to say to God, that we didn’t know. We have the Word of God and His Creation that we enjoy daily so we are without excuse. Remember this if you remember nothing else, there are only two kinds of people in the world today and that people who are saved and going to heaven and people who are lost and going to hell. Don’t be one of those who decide not to decide and go to hell.

This is the greatest decision that you will ever have to consider so be diligent to put all the time that is necessary into seeking the Face of God. God will not snatch you into heaven kicking and screaming, and even if He would you would not like it there because it is too beautiful and Holy and pure and clean. I have told you the truth, so now the ball is in your court. You cannot save yourself, but you can do all that God says is involved in gaining faith and that is read the Word of God.

Until next time,

may God bless and keep you

This is Bro. Bob
