Bible Lesson 68

Improving Our Christian Walk, 2nd in series
Colossians 1:9-11

Christianity is a serious business, and we need to take it very seriously, much more seriously than we have been doing for sometime now. I realize that some, when they read that statement, will say, I take my Christianity very seriously; but let’s review and really determine if we are taking our Christian life and walk as seriously as we should. If I were to ask you what your world view is like or what your reality is at this moment, what would you say’ All of us have a world view, although some may never have verbalized it, or even thought about it. We all have a present reality. Think about this for a moment, and you will have to agree that we have allowed our Christian lives to be a mile wide but only skin deep. We operate, normally, on whatever our cultural world view happens to be at any particular time.

Some may ask well, what has a world view or reality have to do with Christianity? I’m glad that you ask! You must have a proper world view (Biblical world view), to live a proper Christian life. I know that some may not know what the Biblical world view is, and that is the reason for this series of lessons. You will remember that our last lesson used Hebrews 6:1-8, which exhorts us to move past the elementary principles of Christ (the doctrines of baptism, of laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, eternal judgment, dead works, and faith) and move on to perfection, a mature knowledge of God.

That does not mean that we leave and forget the elementary principles, but what we do is to build upon them so that we have a complete and organized theology. We tend to attempt to live for Christ without ever really knowing all that God has revealed to us about Christ. We are like people who attempt to make a long and difficult trip to someplace that we have never been before, without ever looking at a map. We talk about God and recite prayers to God and sing about God, without ever really knowing who God is, or what He expects from us. We are guilty of doing those same kinds of things in most of the things we attempt here on the earth.

We start our children out playing different kinds of ball, like softball, hardball, basketball, soccer, and the like, never really thinking out what they will be exposed to. We like those sports activities for our children, normally because most of them have high sounding standards for the game, and we want our children to learn to live by those standards. Does that sound like we are pawning off our kids on someone that we don’t know to teach them what we should have taught them at home?

The problem normally is that parents normally attend these games where the children play, and parents don’t always apply the standards of the game to themselves. Let’s look at the mission statement for the Little League Baseball, which states its mission is to assist in developing qualities of citizenship, discipline, teamwork, physical well-being, love of country, respect of laws, fair play and striving to win, but win or lose I will do my best.?

Pretty lofty goals?..but then at the games we have many parents who do not subscribe to any of those goals, and you know how offensive many of those parents can be. Adults apply that same kind of mindless love for sports of all kinds. Most parents are sadly not fit to play any games, and they probably were not stand-out athletes in their younger days; they go crazy at games and even in living rooms while they watch T.V.

Most of the time what parents want to do is to live vicariously through their children as they play, and the edgier the sportsmanship of the players the better the parents seem to like it. Too many parents demonstrate a lack of any kind of sportsmanship, as they curse the referees, threaten the children who play, and some even engage in fistfights, ?. How sad! That, among other things, that we are guilty of in this society and even the visible church, leads me to believe that we must go back to square one and begin over, on the road that glorifies God instead of man, money, sports, sex and the like.

We can begin by making sure that we have the proper world view, and that our reality is the ultimate reality, one that takes into account that God has a plan and then we need to know it and be guided by it. The only true reality is that God is sovereign over all things, that He created and He sustains all things, and that ultimately, we will be accountable to Him for how we live while we are on His earth. Normally the reality that we subscribe to is one that man has made up with the devil?s assistance, and we like to think that man is the ultimate reality.

If we understand that, we can begin to come back to the ultimate reality, the reality of a Sovereign, Omnipotent, Omniscience, and Omnipresent God. We can begin by understanding that every man born by natural birth since Adam fell in the Garden of Eden is born under the wrath of God because of the nature that was passed down from Adam. We are born with defective wiring, a nature that is opposed to God and responsive to self.

America just elected a president that will preside over us as our titular head for a time. We are commanded by God to abide by the laws that our government puts into place, as long as they do not violate the clear Word of God. I congratulate President Obama and I will pray for him, as he serves the nation under the direction of God; however, he is not the ultimate reality. God is and God will always be the ultimate reality.

I will support this president as long as He does not violate God’s law; and when he does that, I will use every legal means to oppose him. Our nation needs God’s blessing but it will come only as we satisfy God’s leading for us. We are already reaping the whirlwind of our false reality, and we see that in our complicity in the murder of our unborn babies, and a skyrocketing divorce rate and child endangerment.

We know that we have left the Word and the Will of Almighty God when we see homosexual terrorists parading their offense before man and God as they demand that same-sex marriage be recognized.
We need to remember that there are only two kinds of people in the world, regardless of race, origin, creed, or any other consideration?..there are saved people and lost people and not others. You are one or the other! The gospel of Salvation is very simple and we do not need to lose sight of its simplicity.

The reality of salvation is that you were born lost and you cannot save yourself. You don’t have to try because God took care of that before the foundation of the world when He elected or chose a people to be the bride of Christ, the Church. There is no need to worry if you were elected or chosen to be saved because we preach the gospel to everyone, the only way anyone can ever know if they were elected or not is to submit themselves completely to God and see if you experience the new birth. God did not put a mark on the elect, so come on in, if you can and will.

There is going to be a Judgment at the end, and everyone will be judged on what they did about Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the Cross. Some will go to heaven because they truly submitted and committed themselves to Christ as their King and Savior; while many will be sent to hell for eternity.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, God in the flesh, explains that to us in His Sermon on the mount, in Matthew 7:13-14, where Jesus Christ said that there are two gates that man can go through. One is straight (Narrow), and the other is wide. The narrow gate represents Christ as the only way to heaven, (See Acts 4:12; John 6:44).

That other gate that is easily found and presents no problem to passage will welcome many into hell for eternity. There are consequences to how we follow directions, and if you ignore the fact that there is a narrow gate that leads to eternal bliss, then you must go through that wide gate that leads to eternal torment in hell. The question that begs to be answered here is, how can I be sure that I enter in by that narrow gate?

The answer is that we wake up, and educate ourselves by the Word of God the Bible. Salvation is strictly God’s purview, and He has chosen to have it written down for us in the Bible. We are saved by Grace through Faith, and the Bible tells us that Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God, (Romans 10:17). You must always make sure that you do not depend on someone else to teach you the truth. Get it for yourself by studying the Bible. God has given it to us and His Holy Spirit will illuminate it for you once you produce some evidence of being determined to know God.

Now, I have said all of that to say this?.that we live a false reality about ourselves and our lives, and that is because we view ourselves as the all and in all, rather than God as the all and in all. We seem to believe and live as if we believed that this life is all that there is, and as a consequence of that belief we live as if there is not going to be a judgment and an eternity to spend either in heaven or hell.

We have been treated to cheap grace preaching to the point that we will not hear the truth of God. We have heard preacher disparage the Word of God, the Bible, by questioning and outright denying the absolute truths of God; we have been satisfied to worship only one God and that is the god of self.

Again, I say that Christianity is a serious business and we must be serious if we are going to be true Christians. What most today are serious about is ‘churchianity’; and that is the worship of our church membership and our ‘going’ to church. True Christians do not have to go to church, they are the church. I am not denigrating church attendance, as long as the church is patterned and focused on true worship (Worship of the true God, in Spirit and truth); however, there is not an abundance available today.
True Christians are crucified people, dead and buried with Christ and resurrected to new life by that new birth in regeneration, that supernatural work of God in salvation. (Galatians 2:20; Romans 6:1-14; Ephesians 2:10; 2nd Corinthians 5:17).

We are not little gods, that can demand anything from our sovereign God, but rather depend upon Him moment by moment for life and breath. We who are truly saved, born again and obedient to God through His Son Jesus Christ, now have a Biblical world view and we understand that our God is to be the God of all nations and that it is our job to take the truths of the gospel, however, we can to those who need it. If you have never thought about that, perhaps you need to begin to think in that way.

Jesus Christ after His resurrection commanded His disciples and us today that we are to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, where they were and then in all Judea and Samaria, and then to the end of the earth!? Are we obeying that command? If you said yes, answer to yourself just how you are doing that. That is not meant to embarrass or to challenge you other than to cause you to understand that what you probably do is to tithe in some fashion and you think that some of your tithes go to foreign mission. That may or may not be true because we have spawned such large associations and conventions that most of what you give probably goes to satisfy administration costs. What can you do about that? It’s your money and you meant it to go to some good cause, so you at the very least have the right to have an accounting of it. Good Luck!!!

Most of us could do a lot more than we do if we would just take an interest in obeying our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Chances are that you can go to church every Sunday, all of your life, and never really have a working knowledge of the Bible. By that, I mean that you are being entertained rather than instructed on Sundays, and you do not care if you are growing in the knowledge of Christ and the will of God. Unfortunately, the visible church has been in the business of making church members rather than mature Christians. People who have been going to church regularly all of their life, and yet have no organized theology and are not able to give a good witness of their salvation bother me; because I do not believe that God saves people who never come to fruition.

God does not begin something that He does not complete. What I am trying to get you to do is to examine yourself, to make sure that you are saved; because truly saved people have hunger after righteousness. If you find there is any doubt, begin to study and strive for the knowledge of the Bible. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, just make sure all the answers come from the Bible. I am always happy to answer questions for anyone who wants to ask. All you have to do is go to the home page of our website and click on contact us and send me the question. I promise I will answer and quote scripture to support the answer. Eternal life is too important to risk missing going to heaven, so make very sure that you have been saved according to the Bible.

Until next time,

may God bless and keep you
